The Take It To The Top VICE Expedition has begun!
Austin arrives in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, today. He and three other team members also arriving today, Nick Levin, Zach Matthay and Ryan Stolp, join Rob Gleich, who's been there since June 25 exploring the area and planning the trip.
"5 of us arrived in Bishkek yesterday. We wandered around the city a bit, went swimming in a nearby lake, stopped in on the US Embassy's July 4th BBQ, and even saw some fireworks. Jeff arrives tomorrow and then we head to Ala Archa," Austin said in an email from their Wi-Fi-equipped hostel.
|Bishkek is in northern Kyrgyzstan, near the Kazakhstan border.|
The team will shop for food and fuel, sort their gear, confirm logistics of the trip and await the arrival of the final member of their VICE Expedition, Jeff Longcor.
We're using the Google Earth tracking that Jeff set up for the VICE site, so it won't show that the team's in Bishkek until his arrival.
If you have Google Earth, or want to download it, you can check out their progress here!
Bishkek is the largest city in Kyrgyzstan - and its capital. According to the Wikipedia entry, its name might come from a Kyrgyz word for a churn used to make the Kyrgyz national drink, fermented mare's milk. No word on if Austin plans to try it, but the VICE Expedition info packet says "It tastes as bad as it sounds, but worth the experience!"
