Take It To The Top: A day of travel

As Austin pointed out in his message from the previous blog post, the Take It To The Top VICE Expedition team experienced altitude sickness while acclimatizing in Ala-Archa National Park. They spent today recovering and are ready for the rest of the expedition.

Here's his latest message:

The team has fully recovered and everyone feels strong again. We leave for Maida Adyr base early tomorrow morning by way of Karakol. It'll be a solid 10 to 12 hr travel day. We'll camp at the base tomorrow night and then catch the helicopter to base camp the next day.

Google Earth route from Karakol to Maida Adyr base in Kyrgyzstan

The above Google Earth map shows the route the travelers will probably take from Bishkek to Karakol. They plan to take a public bus and, with a distance of 426 km, that portion of travel is expected to take six hours and 23 minutes.

The image at right shows the next leg of the team's trip from Karakol to the Maida Adyr base camp in the Inylchek valley. You'll notice there's no assumed route mapped out. That's because, according to Google Earth, there isn't one. The team's taking private 4x4 transport to the camp. According to the kyrgyzjer.com travel site, the Maida Adyr base camp "is located at an altitude of 2600m, and 160 km from Karakol (4-5 hours by road or 40 minutes by helicopter). Helicopters (MI-8MTV) are based at the camp for the transport of passengers and cargo throughout the Kyrgyz part of the Central Tien Shan range, which can land at sites up to an altitude of 4500m."

The team will spend the night at Maida Adyr before taking a helicopter to the Djangart Region base camp.
